Waar naartoe met je afval?
Op centrale plaatsen in de gebouwen vind je afvaleilanden voor de meest courante afvalfracties:
- PMD
- Papier & Karton
- Restafval
In het studentenrestaurant worden Groente-, Fruit- en Tuinafval (GFT) en etensresten apart ingezameld en afgevoerd als SWILL-afval. SWILL is een verzamelnaam voor etensresten, die vooral vrijkomen in de keuken en het restaurant. SWILL-afval wordt verwerkt tot nieuwe grondstoffen, vnl. biogas en compost.
Specifieke afvalfracties die ontstaan in labo’s en praktijklokalen worden ook zo goed mogelijk gesorteerd. Meer info vind je in het laboreglement of via de instructies in het labo/praktijklokaal.

Afval correct sorteren zodat het zoveel mogelijk gerecycleerd kan worden, past helemaal binnen de ambitie van UCLL om bij te dragen aan een duurzame samenleving. We willen zelfs verder gaan dan de (wettelijke) sorteerplicht en zetten daarom ook in op afval voorkomen, hergebruik en circulaire economie.
We vertrekken vanuit het principe: "Wat er niet is, moet ook niet weg". De beste manier om met afval om te gaan, is dus het afval te vermijden. Hebben we toch nog afval? Dan sorteren we zoveel mogelijk en laten we het afval recycleren naar grondstoffen. Onderstaande afvalhiërarchie is dan ook de hoeksteen van ons afvalbeleid:

Hoe kan jij afval voorkomen?
- Breng je drinkbus mee en vul ze gratis aan de waterfonteinen.
- Zin in koffie? Gebruik dan een herbruikbare beker of tas. Aan sommige koffieautomaten heb je de keuze en betaal je €0.10 minder als je kiest voor een herbruikbare beker of tas. Voor de automaten waar je die keuze (nog) niet kan maken, bekijken we deze optie met de leveranciers .
- Bezint eer ge print! Vaak kan je documenten digitaal opslaan en vervolgens oproepen via je laptop , gsm of tablet.
Where do you deposit your waste?
you will find designated locations at our campuses to deposit the common waste fractions:
- PMD (Plastic bottles and flasks, metal packaging, and drink cartons)
- Paper & Cardboard
- Residual waste
In the student restaurant, vegetable, fruit and garden waste and food waste are collected separately and disposed of as SWILL waste. SWILL is a collective term for food scraps, which are mainly generated in the kitchen and restaurant. SWILL waste is processed into new raw materials, primarily biogas and compost.
Specific waste fractions generated in labs and practice rooms are also sorted as much as possible. More info can be found in the lab regulations or by reading the instructions in the lab/practice room.
More about the UCLL waste policy
Sorting waste correctly in order to recycle it as much as possible fits perfectly with the UCLL ambition to contribute to a sustainable society. We want to go even further than the (legal) obligation to sort waste, thus we also focus on waste prevention, reuse and circular economy.
Our key principle is : "No waste = no disposal" so the best way to deal with waste is to avoid it. Do we still have waste? Then we sort as much as possible and have the waste recycled into raw materials. The waste hierarchy below is therefore the cornerstone of our waste policy:
- Refuse: Refuse products that are not sustainable and/or recyclable.
- Reduce: Prevent waste and thus reduce the amount we have to dispose of.
- Re-use: Reusing products and materials (circular economy).
- Recycle: Sort and properly dispose of waste so that it can be recycled
How can you prevent waste?
- Bring your water bottle and fill it for free at the water fountains.
- Fancy a coffee? Then use a reusable cup. Some coffee vending machines have the option to pay €0.10 less if you choose a reusable cup. Together with our suppliers we are looking into solutions to install this option on other machines as well.
- Think before you print! Very often you have the option to save documents digitally and access them on your laptop , mobile, or tablet later on.
